Founders' Day
Over 100 years ago the National Congress of Mothers was founded to eliminate threats which endangered children. Thus the work of what is now known as the National Parent Teacher Association began. Through the years PTA has advocated for child labor laws, public health services, nutritious lunch programs, school safety, and excellence in education for all children. We continue that work today by being a voice for all children, providing relevant resources for the tough job we all face as being parents, building partnerships of families, the school, and the community, and continuing to advocate for the best possible education our students can receive.
Founders' Day is a time when we celebrate the legacy and work of those who have come before us. From those on the national and state level like Alice McLellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, Selena Sloan Butler, and Ella Caruthers to those closer to home like Ann Morris, Oma Griffith, Sylvia Greene, Lisann Peters, Susan Caldwell, Lynda Sherrieb, Sue Oestreicher, Patti Wood, Sherri Wade, Jolanda Hendricks, Sue Humer, Becky Reynolds, Carla Crow, Beth Crymes, Torie Deremo, Merry Flatbush, Lori Turano, and Jennifer Boyle.
Our founders represented women of imagination and courage. They had a simple idea—to improve the lives and future of all children. They understood the power of individual action, worked beyond the accepted barriers of their day, and took action to change the world for all children
